A Simple Guide to Hair Oiling (And How to Do It Properly)
Hair oiling has been practiced for centuries, yet many people today feel unsure about how to do it correctly. How much oil should you use? How often? Should it go on the scalp, the ends, or both?
The truth is, hair oiling doesn’t need to be complicated — but it does need to be intentional.
Start With the Scalp
Healthy hair begins at the root. Applying oil to the scalp helps nourish the skin, support circulation, and create the right environment for hair growth. This is especially important if you experience dryness, irritation, shedding, or slow growth.
Use a dropper or your fingertips to apply a small amount directly to the scalp. Massage gently using circular motions for two to three minutes. This isn’t just about the oil — the massage itself helps stimulate blood flow.
Less Is More
One of the biggest misconceptions about hair oiling is that more oil equals better results. In reality, using too much can weigh the hair down and make washing difficult.
A few drops per section is enough. Oils are concentrated — they work best when applied lightly and consistently rather than heavily and occasionally.
Give It Time
Hair oiling isn’t meant to be rushed. Traditionally, oils were left on for at least an hour, and often overnight. This allows the scalp to absorb nutrients and the hair shaft to benefit from deep nourishment.
If you’re short on time, even 30–60 minutes can make a difference. The key is regularity.
Know Where to Apply
• For growth, thinning, or shedding: focus on the scalp and roots
• For dryness, frizz, or dullness: apply lightly to mid-lengths and ends
• For protection: smooth a small amount through the hair before styling or exposure to heat
Different needs require different application — there’s no one-size-fits-all approach.
Wash Gently
When it’s time to rinse, use a gentle shampoo and avoid over-scrubbing. Sometimes a second wash is needed, especially if heavier oils were used. Follow with conditioner only on the lengths if needed.
Consistency Over Perfection
Hair oiling works best when it becomes part of a routine — once or twice a week is enough for most people. You don’t need to oil every day. What matters is showing up regularly and listening to what your hair and scalp need.
⸻
At NABA, we see hair oiling as more than a step in a routine.
It’s a moment of care — a pause. When done with intention, it supports not just healthier hair, but a healthier relationship with how we care for ourselves.
Hair doesn’t need to be forced into looking good.
It needs to be supported, patiently and honestly.
